Religious Judgement

I guess this is what fundamentalists consider fair...

Under Iran's Islamic law, adultery is punishable by stoning, but such sentences are rare. International human rights groups have long criticized stoning in Iran as a cruel form of punishment.

Jamshidi did not describe how the stonings were carried out. But typically under Islamic rulings, a man is buried up to his waist, while a woman is buried up to her neck. Those carrying out the verdict then throw stones until the person dies. If the person manages to escape from the hole, he or she will remain free under Islamic law.

So how come this process makes it so much easier for the men to escape?

Not that I'm necessarily trying to bust on Muslims, mind you. The Bible prescribes stoning for several offenses, and some of them are just as unfair.

That's not busting on Muslims, that's busting on the patriarchy. there's plenty of Muslims out there who will also agree that stoning is horrific.

A reality calibration is required here. Yes, there are millions of Muslims who condemn such behavior. Please note that those Muslims are almost invariably products of and born in the First World. They are generally not considered to be "real Muslims" by their nominal co-religinists. Conversely, there are hundreds of millions who practice such behavior as a matter of routine. I would leave it up to the reader to make up their own mind which is more representative, except that there is no case to be made for Islam being a "religion of peace" It never has been, it never will be. The answer to fundie Islam is the same as the answer was to hardcore Nazism: firepower, selectively and intelligently applied. And don't respond about war never solving anything, neither. The ghosts of the Carthaginians, Napoleon, and Hitler all prove that it is possible to stamp out a pernicious idea if pursued wisely enough.

-snorts- War never solved anything. What bullshit. It may not have solved anything NEATLY, but it does solve things. After all, where would we be without the French-Indian War, the War for Independence, the Mexican-American War, etc.? We wouldn't be where we are today, that's for sure.
